Pregnancy tests
PREGNANCY TESTS are simple to use and very accurate instrument for early detection of pregnancy at home
The principle of pregnancy tests based on detection of the "pregnancy hormone" HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in the urine. In contact with the hormone chemical reaction takes place and particles of a litmus change its color.
In the early stages of pregnancy the concentration of HCG (the pregnancy hormone) in the body increases very rapidly (almost doubling every day) 1-2 weeks after conception the level is about 25-100 mIU/ml. Conception occurs at the time of ovulation – i.e. approximately in the middle of the menstrual cycle. Thus by the time the anticipated start of the menstrual periodit is about 2 weeks from the moment of conception and the concentration of the hormone is high enough for detection.
THE ACCURACY OF PREGNANCY TESTS IS MORE THAN 99%
* even very light second stripe means that you are pregnant
FACTORS AFFECTING THE ACCURACY OF THE TEST:
There are several factors which can affect the accuracy of a pregnancy test.
1) Remember that the highest concentration of the "pregnancy hormone" is in the first morning urine. Therefore, when a test is performed early (in the first day of the expected start of menstruation) it is better to do it in the morning. If the test does not show pregnancy on the first day of delay, you should repeat the test after a couple of days, since the concentration of the hormone in the urine could still be not sufficient for detection. Either you should use an ultra-sensitive pregnancy test that can capture the minimum concentration of the hormone.
2) You should not drink too much of liquids (over 1.5 litres a day) when you are going to make a pregnancy test. Diuretics can also reduce the concentration of hormone in the urineso that test will not be able to recognize at a very early date. To improve the accuracy drink water in normal amounts and refrain (temporarily) from the use of diuretics.
3) Some infertility treating medicine containing HCG may be mistakenby test for a pregnancy. These drugs are usually administered by injection and women taking this drug know about this side effect from a doctor or from the instruction to the drug. (Contraceptive hormonal drugs of all kinds have no influence on the accuracy of a pregnancy test.)
4) There are cases where the test shows the presence of pregnancy, but after a while there comes copious menstruation. In this situation, it is not because of the inaccuracy of the test. When the test was done the woman was pregnant, however, later she for some reason spontaneously aborted.
